Dr Alwin Bully receives another prestigious award for contribution to the Arts

This year he is the recipient of the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the Earl Warner Trust “in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the Performing Arts and his continued advocacy for Caribbean cultural expressions”.

In a letter to Dr Bully from the Trust, which was made available to Dominica News Online, he was told he was being held in the “highest regard”.

“The Trust, through the Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizes and honors the work of outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the theater arts in the Caribbean…” the letter reads.

As part of the award, the 2022 Earl Warner Memorial Lecture entitled “The Fierceest Passion: Alwin Bully and the Cultural Renaissance of the Caribbean” will be delivered by another distinguished Dominican, Dr. Lennox Honychurch, Caribbean anthropologist, historian, academic and artist.

Dr. Honychurch will deliver the lecture on October 28 at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus in Barbados.

According to the Trust, the lecture will address “Dr. Bully’s personal contribution to Art.”

The Earl Warner Trust is a charitable, not-for-profit entity established to honor the memory and work of renowned Barbadian theater director and playwright Earl McDonald Warner.

Previous recipients of the award include, Dr. Cynthia Wilson of Barbados, the late Errol Jones of Trinidad and Tobago and Dr. Michael Gilkes from Guyana and many other Caribbean people.

The Trust has a branch in Jamaica whose main focus is to support students in the performing arts with scholarships and bursaries, traditionally for students of the Jamaica School of Drama, Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Other awards and recognitions awarded to Dr Bully include but are not limited to:

-Cacique Award 2007 for the Regional Theatre

-Induction into the Jamaican Culture Hall of Fame for Development

-University of Technology Arts Award (in Jamaica) 2006

-LIME Creole Lifetime Award for contribution to art and culture in Dominica and the region

-The University of the West Indies (UWI) Alumni Award of Excellence for Outstanding Contribution to Culture in Dominica and the Caribbean

– Honoris Causa Doctor of Letters degree from UWI for his contribution to Caribbean society in the field of culture and the arts
