With eleven unpublished works dedicated to the duo, “The composer is alive!” is the result of a national tour in five Brazilian cities and offers a contemporary portrait of the country’s musical composition
The symbol of the protection of Brazilian music, the cello duo formed by the twins Paulo and Ricardo Santoro reaches the third album of an extensive career that began in 1990. The continuation of the distribution of the works of national composers – “Bem Brasileiro”, the album of their 2013 debut, brought together the iconic Villa-Lobos, Nazareth and Mahle with contemporaries João Guilherme Ripper, Alexandre Schubert and Ernani Aguiar, among others – DUO SANTORO kicks off, Sunday, October 30, at 11am, at the Centro da Música Carioca Artur da T (Tijuca), his new unreleased album, “The composer is alive!”, crossing the border of Rio de Janeiro, the main theme of “Paisagens Cariocas”, his second album, released in 2017.
Available from October 25 on major music streaming platforms (Apple Music, Spotify, Deezer, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Tidal), the digital album is the result of the national tour of the “Composer is alive!” project. held between April and June of this year, when the brothers performed in five Brazilian cities: Mariana (MG), Corumbá (MS), Vitória (ES), Belém (PA) and São Luís (MA). Sponsored by the Instituto Cultural Vale, through the Federal Law for the Stimulation of Culture, and realized by the Special Secretariat for Culture, the Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Government, the publication brings together the eleven unpublished compositions presented in the tour, written and dedicated especially to the duo. “We leave these songs for posterity, in the hope that young Brazilian composers will be encouraged to write for Duo Santoro”, emphasizes Ricardo Santoro. “Today we managed to turn into reality a dream that started in April, with the first of five concerts held”, he adds.
The starting point of the contemporary musical journey is with the pieces “As asas são semper leve” and “De bem com a vida”, by the composer from Pará Luiz Pardal, revealing the borderline writing style of this retired professor from Federal. The University of Para, where the popular and the erudite walk freely in this version for two cellos commissioned by Duo Santoro in 2022. Next, Minas Gerais composer Eli Joory, in the song “Janeiro no Rio”, records the times he lived in the city of Rio de Janeiro. January. With a powerful and expressive sound, the song explores some characteristic elements of Brazilian music. Based in Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais composer Alexandre Schubert used as a source of inspiration for his “Casario de Minas” the houses of the historic towns of his native state, musicalizing their architectural beauty, the pleasure of walking the streets and slopes. the aroma of good coffee.
Composer of soundtracks for several Brazilian films, Joaquim Santos, a composer from Maranhão, wrote “Galope e Romance” in traditional ABA form, based, in many cases, on scenes from the northeastern Brazilian interior. “Rapsódia em Duo”, written by Chico Chagas – a composer from Accra by birth and Espirito Santo by choice – presents, like any rhapsody, a free form, moving through different themes with erudite and popular characteristics. As its title suggests, the piece is a tribute to the famous “Rhapsody in Blue” by Gershwin. Written in three movements by the composer and conductor Eduardo Martinelli from Mato Grosso, the “Mini Suite Mestre Pantaneiro” is based on the tunes of the pantaneiro master of viola de cocho “Agripino”. Its three movements are “Cor de Canela”, “Air” and “Marrequinha”, the latter being one of the most popular and popular songs from the swamp of Mato Grosso.
Born in Mato Grosso do Sul, Cyro Delvizio brings out the local sounds in “Passacaglia in the rhythm of Guarania”. Passacaglia is a style of musical composition based on a theme, repeated over and over in the bass and variations of that theme in the main melody. Guarania is a style that originated in Paraguay, influencing the folk music of Mato Grosso do Sul. Composed by conductor and composer from Pará, Cibelle J. Donza, professor at the Federal University of Pará, “Olho d’água” alternates powerful and lyrical moments, expressed in dance and lundus through the characteristic effects of the cellist’s language. In the “Portrait of Dona Melancolia and Dona Solidão on the porch of the old house”, Antonio Celso Ribeiro is inspired by the images he experienced in his childhood in Pouso Alegre (MG) – today the composer is based in Vitória. Born in Garibaldi (RS) and currently a professor at the Federal University of Maranhao, Ricardo Mazzini Bordini concludes the sound journey with “O esvoaçar das gêrseta in the mess of girls”, a continuous and uninterrupted happy and fun conversation between two cellos . .
