Former president of the College of Physicians of Puerto Rico, Dr. Victor Ramos, confirmed today on RADIO ISLA that San Jorge Children’s Hospital filed for bankruptcy.
Victor Ramos, who is a pediatrician and has worked at the facility since graduating in 2001, reported that the “main problem” for which this medical facility filed for bankruptcy was due to lack of payment and reimbursement from medical insurers. In addition, Ramos indicated that another factor was “the low birth rate we have had” which greatly affects pediatric hospitals.
Ramos added that other factors were the pandemic and Hurricane Maria. “All these strikes together, mainly the insurance issue, have affected the hospital”, explained the doctor.
According to reports, the hospital voluntarily filed for bankruptcy with the Federal Bankruptcy Court, located in Old San Juan, yesterday, September 1st.
This news comes at a time when a potential health crisis is looming due to the shortage of pediatricians in Puerto Rico. In addition, on August 31, it was revealed that the HIMA hospital in Fajardo closed the neonatal ward and the delivery room due to the lack of pediatric obstetricians.
