Launched in June, Twitter Blue is the social media giant’s first subscription service for those willing to pay for exclusive access to special features — such as an “Undo Tweet” feature, custom Twitter app icons and the ability to to add bookmarks.
In one series of tweets On Saturday, Musk suggested there would be no ads and the subscription price would be lowered.
“Everyone who signs up for Twitter Blue (ie pays $3/month) should get a verification token,” he tweeted.
“The price should probably be ~$2/month, but it’s paid 12 months in advance and the account doesn’t get a checkmark for 60 days (check for CC refunds) and gets suspended without a refund if used for fraud/spam,” he said.
“And no ads. The power of corporations to dictate policy increases greatly if Twitter depends on ad money to survive,” he added.
Musk also proposed that pricing “should be commensurate with affordability and in the local currency.”
“Maybe even an option to pay in Doge?” he suggested, referring to cryptocurrency.
Twitter has not yet responded to CNBC’s request for comment.
The Twitter Blue service is only available in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The undo feature allows subscribers to change their tweet before it goes live. It’s not an editing feature, which Twitter users have often requested. “It’s not an edit button, but a chance to see and review your Tweet before it’s posted for the world to see,” the company said.
