Emancipation Day celebration marks end of Tobago Heritage Festival

The month of July has been declared Heritage Month in Tobago, with events across the island from 1 July to 1 August 2024.

The theme of this year’s Festival is “We Go Back: Back to our communities, back to our villages, back to our genuine Indigenous Heritage presentations and productions”.

The festival sees the return of iconic events such as the Belmanna Riots in Roxborough on July 29, the Folk Fiesta Challenge on July 21 and Yesterday’s Children, as well as signature events such as the Tobago Ole Time Wedding in Moriah on July 20 and the Plymouth Ole Time Carnival in July. 27.

The aim of this year’s theme is to highlight the importance of going back to Tobago’s roots, celebrating the people and communities that make Tobago so special. From the culinary aspect of the Harvest Food Competition to the Choir Competition and the Harvest Cantata, this Festival is honoring the traditions and history of Tobago.

“Let’s come together, reconnect with the past and celebrate Tobago’s vibrant culture and heritage. Get ready for an unforgettable experience as this year’s Heritage Festival says, ‘We Go Back’ to the true essence of the island,” said vice chairman of the board, Gilbert O’Connor.

Many of the events will have Heritage memorabilia for sale including t-shirts, umbrellas, enamel mugs, water bottles and much more.

Sponsors and partners already committed to this year’s event include First Citizens, bmobile, Magdalena Grand Beach & Golf Resort, Republic Bank, NFM, Bermudez, Holiday Snacks, Level 9 Advertising and over 20 village/community businesses. The event is also supported by the Tobago Tourism Agency, the Tobago Performing Arts Company Limited and the Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities and Transport.

October will also be a busy month for the Commission as they will also host the Tobago Blue Food Festival on Sunday, October 20 and the Tobago Carnival from October 25 to 27, 2024.
