Mayor-elect Eric Adams is looking to step up his Twitter game — and he’s turned to Miami Mayor Francis Suarez for help, On The Money has learned.
Adams, who is slated to take over New York City on Jan. 1, does not manage his own Twitter account and barely knows how to tweet despite amassing 74,500 followers as of Monday, according to sources close to the situation. .
Therefore, Adams has recently been looking to Suarez (127,000 followers as of Monday) for advice on how to engage with Twitterati — especially in the crypto community, sources say.
Suarez, for his part, runs his own account and doesn’t seek approval before tweeting out tweets that can occasionally go viral — for example his Nov. 2 tweet saying he would take the salary of his at “100% in bitcoin,” according to a source close to Suarez.
Meanwhile, some critics said Adams never seemed more in need of advice on social media than he did two days later, when he responded to Suarez’s bitcoin post by not only making the same outlandish promise, but tripling it effectively.
“In New York we always go big, so I’ll be getting my first THREE payments in Bitcoin when I become mayor,” Adams tweeted on November 4th. “NYC is going to be the hub of the crypto and other fast paced industry. growing, innovative industry! Just wait!”
Adams and Suarez have recently been “in touch” and have been “very friendly” over the past few months, according to a well-placed source. The two men first met when Adams flew to Miami in August to record an episode of Suarez’s “Cafecito Talk” podcast.
The match began soon after, when Adams suggested in an interview in September that he would fly to Miami and lure New Yorkers fleeing to warmer weather during the coronavirus.
“The president-elect and Mayor Suarez have a friendly rivalry and have talked about cryptocurrency several times,” Evan Thies, Adams’ spokesman, told The Post. “He looks forward to continued competition as mayor and bringing New Yorkers back to New York!”
Suarez is expected to fly to New York for Adam’s first day as mayor on Jan. 1. Likewise, Adams is expected to fly to Miami on Jan. 3, when Suarez will be sworn in as president of the US Conference of Mayors.
Separately last month, Adams raised eyebrows when he flew to Puerto Rico on bitcoin billionaire Brock Pierce’s private Gulfstream jet. The president-elect told reporters in San Juan that he paid for the trip himself.
“Before the question is asked, I paid for it myself. I learned that the best way to tell people to mind their own business is to come out of pocket and wait for your check, so I’m here on my own time,” Adams said at the time, according to Politico. It’s on my dollar, my currency and my time.”
