Celebrating Indian heritage
During May and June, three countries – Guyana (May 5), Trinidad & Tobago (May 30) and Suriname (June 5) – commemorate the arrival of the earliest forced migrants from India, who migrated in waves starting at the end of 1830s. and whose religions, arts, food and philosophy have enriched the diverse cultural landscape of the Caribbean. Across the region, cultural groups honor this heritage with performances, education and historical re-enactments. Additionally, on May 2, Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr – the breaking of the fast at the end of the holy month of Ramadan. It is also a public holiday in T&T.
Festival time
In the long-awaited Antigua Sailing Week (April 30–May 6), witness sailors from around the world show off their nautical skills, with great music and food to complement the experience. Later in the month, sister island Barbuda takes center stage Caribbean celebrations (May 28-June 1).
of Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival (May 1–10) is back in Gros Islet, featuring regional and international artists who specialize in jazz and other genres.
May is a big month in Dominica! Besides Jazz ‘n Creole (May 1), art lovers can enjoy concerts, theater, dance and workshops at DOMFESTA (Dominica Festival of the Creative Arts). Meanwhile, outdoor enthusiasts won’t want to miss it all Hike Fest adventure on the first three Saturdays of the month.
Barbados embraces its Celtic heritage with Barbados Celtic Festival (May 12-15). Bagpipers, singers and drummers from England, Scotland, Wales and Canada come to the island to celebrate the unique relationship between the Bajans and the Celts.
From wandering through the Theobroma cacao forest to tasting wonderful chocolate-inspired cuisine, adventures await chocolate lovers and the curious at. Grenada Chocolate Festival (May 13–18).
The inauguration Granada Dive & Conservation Festival (May 18–23) invites divers of all skill levels to discover the beautiful underwater sculpture park, vibrant marine life at over 30 dive sites around the island, and a variety of conservation-minded activities such as beach clean-ups, invasive species hunts and planting trees.
Guyana Carnival (May 20–27) celebrates Guyana’s Independence, fully embracing the vibrancy of local music, dance and traditions rather than traditional grandeur and ceremony.
IN Orlando Carnival (May 27–29), experience the Caribbean in the USA with fabulous costumes, the latest soca hits and a community of Caribbean carnival lovers from across the diaspora.
On June 11th, test your fitness in Tobago’s epic international triathlon, Tobago Rainbow Cupwhere athletes from all over the world will compete for supremacy.
St Kitts Music Festival is back (June 24–25)! The lineup includes artists such as Mr Killa, Koffee and Nailah Blackman.
