hectares: 341,735| Contents: 98% | Total staff: 459| Start date: Hermit’s Peak: April 6, 2022; Calf Canyon: April 19, 2022 | Cause: Hermit’s Peak: Discover fires from prescribed burning; Calf Canyon: Holding fire from designated pile burning | Location: 12 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NM | Fuels: Mixed heavy conifers, ponderosa pine, brush and grass
Main points: Fire officials are asking all residents and visitors to use caution when driving on roads around the fire area, many roads have been damaged by rain, and to obey all traffic warnings. Firefighters and equipment operations continue to work to remove debris, mud and rocks from roads, while trucks move heavy equipment and dump trucks to areas where flooding has occurred. Logging trucks have begun moving logs from Osha Pass to the Angel Fire along Forest Road 76 and NM 434. Stay alert and drive carefully for your safety and those working to clear the roads.
operations: After several days of heavy rain, crews continue to identify and evaluate repairs needed to reduce evidence of suppression activities on the landscape. Crews are almost done repairing the fence and clearing the roads near Lower Rociada. Weather conditions have allowed planting operations and repair activities south of Angostura along the perimeter of the fire and installation of conduit where necessary northwest of Bear Mountain.
Closures: Santa Fe National Forest has reduced the fire closure area opening additional access to the Pecos Wilderness. To view the new closure order and map, visit – Santa Fe – Alerts & Notices (usda.gov). Monsoon weather and the completion of press repair activities play a role in the decision to lift closure orders and the safety of the public, firefighting personnel and incident responders is always our first priority.
Weather: High pressure will begin to migrate from the Four Corners to the Great Plains, further closing off access to the monsoon plume. This will reduce our afternoon storm coverage to isolated south of the Sangre de Cristos and their adjacent highlands. Any storms that develop will be plagued by the storm’s slow motion, trending west-northwest to northwest. Temperatures will be slightly higher.
