The alert is in effect from 09:00, September 6 and will end at 18:00 or earlier if conditions warrant.
A flash flood warning is issued when flash flooding due to heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period of time (generally less than 6 hours) occurs or is imminent in the warning area.
Cause:
A tropical wave is currently affecting Barbados and is forecast to generate excessive rainfall across the island today.
Precipitation:
Current model guidance suggests rainfall accumulations of between 50mm and 75mm are possible for parts of the island today, which could result in flooding.
Advice:
Residents and visitors should note that the following impacts are unavoidable during this forecast period:
Significant runoff from higher elevations Significant surface soil erosion is likely on exposed or scarred soils Large water bodies in roads and fields Significant adjustments to water levels of existing bodies of water (ponds etc.) Delay significant on traffic routes with some roads possibly impassable Large objects or debris can also be swept into fast moving water courses. Significant flooding is possible in foothills and coastal roads.
