Forecast remains for TS Earl to become a hurricane Loop Barbados

Tropical Storm Earl continues to move north from Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) in its 8am forecast said TS Earl was now about 190 miles (305 kilometers) north of St Thomas.

TS Earl is moving north-northwest at about 5 mph (7 km/h) and is expected to turn north at a slightly faster forward speed later today.

There has been little change in TS Earl as the storm continues to have maximum sustained winds near 50 mph (85 km/h).

However, the NHC said environmental conditions are favorable for TS Earl to become a hurricane later this week.

The Risks

RAINFALL: TS Earl is expected to produce additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 4 inches, with isolated storm totals of 8 inches, across the Leeward Islands, US and British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico through Monday. Limited impacts of flash, urban and small stream flooding are possible. Rapid river rises and mudslides in areas of steep terrain are also possible, especially throughout the interior central region of Puerto Rico. Significant local flooding impacts are possible in areas that will experience higher rainfall totals.

WIND: Strong winds, especially gusty, are possible in the northern Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico for several more hours.
