Former president of the National Council of Indian Culture (NCIC) Deokinanan Sharma has passed away.
Sharma passed away on Friday at the age of 87.
NCIC First Vice President Surujdeo Mangaroo reflected on Sharma’s contributions, saying, “His dedication to the promotion and preservation of Indian culture in Trinidad has left an indelible mark on our community.
Dr Sharma was not only an influential figure but also a source of inspiration and guidance to many. His passion, wisdom and dedication to cultural advancement will be sorely missed.”
Meanwhile, President Christine Kangaloo expressed grief over Sharma’s passing away.
She noted that he was the visionary founder and former president of NCIC and was the driving force behind Divali Nagar, which traditionally leads to the annual Diwali Festival of Lights.
The President said he is also recognized for his outstanding contribution to the cultural landscape of Trinidad and Tobago, particularly in the promotion of Indian culture through his roles with the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha and the National Hindu Youth Organisation.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution, Dr Sharma was awarded the prestigious Gold Hummingbird Medal in 1995.
Furthermore, his outstanding work in the field of culture was further recognized when he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree by the University of the West Indies in 2012.
