Garcia-Gomez Nets Brace; Pacific Wins Second Straight Contest

PORTLAND, Ore. – Pacific Women’s Soccer made it two wins in two games to start the 2022 season with a 3-1 win over host Warner Pacific on Tuesday night.

The Boxers were very bright in attack, led by Ivette Garcia-Gomez great offensive display. Warner Pacific nearly found the equalizer in the dying minutes, but a timely counterattack by Pacific secured victory.

The best performers

  • Ivette Garcia-Gomez found the back of the net twice on Tuesday night, scoring once from the penalty spot and doubling her luck from outside the box just after half-time.
  • Mirella Garcia scored for the second straight contest, scoring her second goal of the season.
  • Chanyn Santos was lively on the left wing, drawing a foul in the box to earn Pacific a free kick before providing an assist for the team’s second goal.
  • Kylie Pascual made eight saves between posts.

How It Happened

The Boxers struck first after being awarded a penalty in the 8thth minute after a brilliant attack. A turnover found Santos getting behind the Warner Pacific defense and the freshman did well to beat the keeper and draw the foul in the box. Garcia-Gomez kept her cool and slotted her shot into the back of the net to give her team an early 1-0 lead.

Pacific doubled their advantage just after the start of the second half when Santos made another run down the left flank before picking out Garcia-Gomez at the top of the box. The junior shifted the ball onto her right foot and fired just inside the post to double the Boxers’ lead and score her second goal of the night.

The hosts finally found a foothold in the game when they scored a goal through xx just x minutes later, making it a one-goal game at 51str minute.

The Forest Grove side had a tough time hanging on in the final 10 minutes as the Knights piled on the pressure. The back line held strong and Pascual came through with an important stop in a 1-on-1 opportunity. Pacific held on long enough to spark a dangerous counterattack that was expertly finished off by Garcia, sealing the 3-1 road win.

What does it mean

The Boxers have defeated Warner Pacific 3-1 in back-to-back seasons. This is the second straight season Pacific has started the season with two straight wins.

Pacific heads down to Eugene, Ore. to face Bushnell University on Sept. 11 at 1 p.m.
