Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) players plan to turn their disappointment of not winning the recently concluded SKYECH 6IXTY competition into motivation as they prepare to begin their journey to win a maiden Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title.
GAW captain Shimron Hetmyer told members of the media today that the 6IXTY was a great learning experience for his teammates who were making their debut in the new version of short and fast pace cricket.
“We didn’t play to the best of our abilities, but it was still a learning curve for us,” Hetmyer said.
He noted that 6IXTY gave GAW an opportunity to better plan how players use them.
Despite the disappointment, the 26-year-old said he was excited to captain GAW, after stepping down from the responsibility in the last editions of the CPL.
Hetmyer admitted that GAW is feeling the pressure to perform especially in the latter stages of the tournament, when matches will be set on home soil.
“Knowing you’re playing at home is always fun and exciting, but it’s also very challenging because there’s this pressure to win,” he said. “I really like playing in Guyana. I love playing at home with the crowd and knowing the conditions, I’m playing. So all this helps me. It makes it more exciting and a little bit more special to play in Guyana.”
But he pointed out that his players are taking each match one game at a time and they are not focusing on what happened in the previous editions of the CPL.
