Gerard Whateley has taken a look at the upcoming Spring Carnival schedule and proposed a revamped programme.
Whateley’s new schedule will allow the Melbourne and Sydney Spring Carnivals to get their time in the spotlight.
Why should riders decide whether to ride in Sydney for the Everest meeting or ride in Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup meeting? Surely the two racing bodies could construct a schedule that has those separate meetings as independent days.
Whateley has taken on the tough job of spring scheduling.
Why can’t we have the best of both worlds?
The best of both worlds
(Based on the 2022 calendar and scheduled races)
A 13-week run of Group 1 races between Australia’s biggest racing grounds.
The Sydney Group 1 race starts on September 10 rather than August 20.
Melbourne’s Group 1 races kick off the day after the AFL grand final.
Sydney Carnival is the main attraction until 22 October.
The traditional Melbourne run starts on October 29.
The Melbourne race owns the sports month of November instead of ending on November 5.
