It’s been two years since Grenada has officially held any carnival activities like last year, some revelers got a chance to play jab mas in the streets

In a message to Grenadians prior to the commencement of Carnival activities, Mitchell noted that it has been two long years since Grenada as a people has been able to enjoy the festivities of the Carnival season.

The Prime Minister said that as a carnival enthusiast himself, he understands the reception – the excitement of the shows, calypso and steel competitions, concerts and gatherings of all kinds, which present opportunities for reunions, entertainment and industry.

He said their street theater artistry also has a special appeal, from the dancing and masquerading of Jab Jab, Shortknee, Vieux Corps and Wild Indians, to the satire of Grenada’s Old Mass.

The Prime Minister stressed that, emerging from the constraints of a global pandemic that limited people’s movements and ability to interact, Spicemas this year stays true to its deepest meaning – that of freedom and celebration.

He said that as Grenadians enjoy the festivities this year, to also reflect on the history of the holiday – the ancestral heritage that comes to life with every beat of the drum in their music, the dresses and models of their costumed spectacle, and the passionate songs and their street theater dance and live performances.

“As we continue to participate and enjoy Spicemas, remember to be safe and respectful. Let’s appreciate the return of celebrations in a safe and positive way, doing so in moderation and with respect for ourselves and others.”

The Prime Minister said Grenada’s carnival and celebration of culture is the single largest annual income-generating activity for many citizens, with ripple effects that can be felt across all sectors of the economy.

“To our vendors, suppliers, service providers and all of us who patronize, we wish you the best for a successful and enjoyable season.

Carnival belongs to us all. So let’s all do our part to ensure that Spicemas remains safe, clean and enjoyable so that we can all enjoy the social, cultural and economic benefits of the season for many years to come.”

He also called on the citizens to have fun and keep the carnival festivities free of violence.
