Queen Elizabeth died on Thursday as she lived quietly and with royal dignity, a dignity that has characterized her more than 70 turbulent years on the throne, making her Britain’s longest-serving monarch.
Her death at the age of 96 came at her beloved Balmoral Castle in Scotland, surrounded by her often troubled family.
It is truly the end of an era, the last change of an old guard that will now pass into the history books.
