Hackney cancels its first physical carnival due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II

Sunday 11 September was meant to mark the triumphant return to the streets of East London for the Hackney Carnival. For the last two years the event had to be held virtually due to the pandemic.

With the sad death of HM Queen Elizabeth II yesterday, Thursday 8 September, organizers have taken the decision to cancel this year’s Hackney Carnival as the nation enters an official 10-day period of mourning to observe the loss of its longest-reigning monarch . Many sporting and other events have also been canceled as a mark of respect.

In a statement to the participating groups, organizers said:

“We know how incredibly disappointing this will be for you and everyone else who has been waiting to perform at the Carnival. The Council is deeply sorry for the sadness and distress it will cause. We are truly grateful for all of your incredibly hard work and tireless dedication in preparing for the event.

“If we cannot postpone or provide an alternative activity, the council will certainly honor all payments to all involved.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

The council is considering whether it is possible to hold the carnival at a later date this year or if there is another way that the work of the carnival groups and artists can be exhibited.
