Haitian Nonprofit Files Criminal Charges Against Trump and Vance

News Americas, New York, NY, September 24, 2024: In Ohio, private citizens have the legal ability to file criminal charges, and on Tuesday, the Haitian Bridge Alliance, a nonprofit organization, exercised that right by filing charges against former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator JD Vance. The two, currently running on the GOP ticket for president and vice president, face charges stemming from unsubstantiated claims they made about the immigrant population in Springfield, Ohio.

Bomb threats are being sent to schools and businesses are closing at sunset in Springfield, Ohio, as the small American town has become the center of racist conspiracy theories targeting the Haitian immigrant community – leaving some fearing for their lives. The charges, filed in Clark County Municipal Court, include several serious charges. The Chandra law firm, which represents the Haitian Bridge Alliance, argues there is probable cause to believe both Trump and Vance have committed crimes. The group wants a judge to confirm this by filing charges and issuing an arrest warrant.

Among the charges are:

Disruption of public service: Violation of Ohio law by causing widespread disruption through bombings and other threats in Springfield, Ohio.
Making False Alarms: Knowingly spreading false information that caused alarm within the Springfield community.
Telecommunications Harassment: Sharing false claims during the presidential debate, campaign rallies, and through media platforms.
Aggravated Threatening: Making intimidating statements, including threats to deport legal immigrants to Venezuela.
Complicity: Conspiracy to spread false information, leading to crimes affecting innocent parties.

Haitian Bridge Alliance Senior Counsel Subodh Chandra noted that the Haitian community in Springfield has been living in fear because of the “relentless, irresponsible” statements made by Trump and Vance. Chandra asked the court to issue arrest warrants immediately, pointing out that such actions would have led to quick arrests if carried out by others.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, told the Fox News Ohio affiliate that the former president is dealing with a broken system and that the issues in Springfield are the result of failed policies under President Kamala Harris.

At the time of filing, officials at Springfield Municipal Court had not yet responded to whether the charges would continue or whether a hearing would be held.
