Heatwave cuts number of entrants to Dover Carnival 2022 from expected 33 to 25

The weekend’s heat wave took its toll on Dover Town Carnaval, with attendances down by a quarter.

A total of 33 were expected, but this was cut to 25 with key groups and participants pulling out.

A few classic cars also broke down en route to Sunday’s event.

But still more than 300 members of the public turned out to watch the procession, in fact 100 more than expected during the scorching heat.

Ellen Habbershaw, vice-chairman of the carnival, said: “Overall it was a fantastic event which ran smoothly.”

Participants in the parade included Dover Pride, De Bradelie Wharf, Royal Mail and Dover Cineworld.

Among the award winners were the Faversham Carnival group, who won first place for best float to visit.

KB Dance came first in the dance troupe category and Miss Lydd won first place for Queen of Queens.

The procession route ran from Maison Dieu Car Park to Maison Dieu Road, Pencester Road, Biggin Street, High Street, Bridge Street and back to Maison Dieu Road and the car park.

This year, the benefiting charity was the Kelly Turner Foundation, named after the Dover teenager, who died five years ago from a rare cancer called desmoplastic small round cell tumour.
