The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for “extreme heat” for the first time ever as some areas exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
As Britons grapple with the sweltering heatwave, an avalanche of tips and tricks are circulating online to help everyone cope with the rising temperatures.
Twitter threads sharing tips for these unseasonably hot days have gone viral, with one in particular from @NJSimmondsbooks offering words of wisdom to the masses.
The Twitter user drew from their experiences living in Spain and Australia to lend a helping hand to their followers amid the weather emergency.

As much as you may be tempted to open those windows, it is advisable to keep them closed and draw the curtains and drapes to keep the house cool and shaded.
NJ Simmonds also advises users to ‘hold still’, which echoes the sentiment that can be seen in the news currently; avoid going out and being in the sun where possible – save that energy!

And if you do decide to leave your residence, then try to minimize it during the cooler hours, as the viral Twitter user puts it, “early morning and sunset.” Doctors advise staying out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, when UV rays are strongest.
To keep your body cool, choose a cold shower! And if that’s not enough, then a cold compress on the back of the neck can help regulate body temperature throughout the day.
As for the night, we’re all struggling to sleep in the heat, but a top tip from the Twittersphere is to say goodbye to the duvet and put your sheets in the fridge before turning in for the night, this can make all the difference. .
And, of course, stay hydrated! Drink, drink and drink some more, and don’t leave home without a bottle of water – and avoid excess alcohol.
