Wordle, the everyday word game
Wordle is a web-based word game created and developed by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle, and owned and published by The New York Times Company.
It is a word game in which players are given six attempts to find a five-letter word. Feedback is provided for each guess in the form of colored tiles, indicating when the letters match or occupy the correct position. It ends automatically if a player gets the correct word.
Wardle originally created the game for him and his partner to play, eventually making it public in October 2021. The game gained huge popularity in December 2021 after Wardle added the ability for players to copy their daily scores as emoji squares, which were shared widely on Twitter.
Over 300,000 people played Wordle on January 2, 2022, up from 90 players on November 1, 2021. A figure that grew to over 2 million a week later. The total number of players is even higher now.
The game is now available in many international languages.
