FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Razorbacks (2-1-0) opened the homestand with a 4-1 win over Arkansas State (1-2-1) on Sunday.
How did it happen?
For the second consecutive season, Arkansas’ first goal at home was scored in an unconventional way and was scored by forward Anna Podojil. 23 minutes into the game, forward Sophia Aragon was fouled in the penalty area after her shot was blocked by Arkansas State goalkeeper Damaris Deschaine. Podojil fired the penalty across the ground and into the right side of the goal.
The first Razorback Field goal last season, by Podojil, was a 6-yard indirect free kick against No. 25 BYU on Aug. 30.
With the result, 38th of her career, she is now tied with Ruthie Miller for third in goals in program history.
The Hogs struck again with a minute left before halftime. A pass from midfielder Keller Matise on the near wing ended up ricocheting off two Red Wolves defenders right where defender Shana Flynn was waiting. Flynn charged and fired a right-footed shot that hit the far post and into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Arkansas finished the half outscoring Arkansas State, 14-3.
The Razorbacks went up by three goals after forward Ava Tankersley headed home a corner kick from forward Zoe Shepherd. The goal was Tankersley’s first of the season.
For the second straight game, the Hogs scored an own goal. A. Podojill brought the ball down court and attempted to connect with freshman Taylor Berman on the penalty kick, however, the pass found the leg of an Arkansas State defender and past Red Wolves freshman goalkeeper Olivia Luther.
The visiting team avoided a shutout with a minute left after forward Sydoney Clarke got them on the board by beating Razorback freshman goalkeeper Sierra Cota-Yarde.
Arkansas finished the game outscoring the Red Wolves, 29-6. A. Podojil led the Razorbacks with four hits and put two in the frame.
