- Hacker Jane Wong has gained notoriety for finding features in apps before they are announced.
- It recently added an Ethereum tips feature that hasn’t been announced by Twitter.
Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s outgoing CEO, is known for focusing all of his crypto efforts on Bitcoin — so it’s fitting that, on the day of his resignation, a hacker has drawn attention to the addition of a Ethereum address on her Twitter tips button.
The hacker is Hong Kong-based Jane Wong, who has gained fame for her skills in manipulating code in apps like Instagram and Spotify to reveal features the companies have yet to announce.
In Twitter’s case, Wong was able to fix a part of the app that allows users to receive tips in the form of Bitcoin or fiat from Venmo and a handful of other payment platforms. These payment options don’t currently include Ethereum — but Wong found a way to add one anyway, as this screenshot shows:
“The feature has been around since at least September. But I don’t think it’s widely available yet. I did my magic to add the address to my jar,” Wong said in a tweet to. Decode. “I tease the internals of the Twitter app.”
Twitter’s tip feature is limited to iOS mobile device users, though the company has started rolling it out to Android users as well. It’s unclear when (or even if) the company will officially launch Ethereum’s tipping option — though skilled hackers could presumably follow Wong’s lead and do it themselves in the meantime.
In response to a request for comment about Wong’s change, Twitter said decode that the company is looking into the matter and will respond later.
Meanwhile, crypto users on Twitter have used Wong’s tweet to speculate that Dorsey’s departure could usher in a more pro-Ethereum stance at the company.
As for Wong, she says she’s not aware if Dorsey has expressed an opinion about developers working on Ethereum-related features for the platform. But she added: “I think having Jack out should make it easier to get the green light for these.”
After this story was published, a reader noted that others have been able to tweak the Twitter interface to add Ethereum wallets:
