How to Upload an X (formerly Twitter) Profile Picture

Part of setting up your X (formerly Twitter) account is choosing an image that serves as your profile picture across the X website. This article shows you how.

If you don’t upload an image, your account displays a simple gray silhouette. Typically, accounts without profile pictures are not considered trustworthy because fake accounts rarely upload them.

Benefits of using an X profile picture

Your profile picture plays an important role. It identifies your tweets to your followers and builds your brand. Usually, your best bet is a headshot of yourself at your best. However, it could be anything else, such as a pet, company logo, car or building.

X requires two photos when setting up an account:

  • Headshot: This large image appears at the top of your profile.
  • Profile picture: This photo adds personality to your X account and posts.

If you didn’t upload an image when you signed up for your account or you’re not happy with your current profile, upload a new photo.

Your profile picture appears in several places on X: next to every tweet you write, in the menu bar, in your account information panel, and on your profile page. In addition, X automatically handles the size of pictures.

X profile picture size and specifications

Your X image must be a JPEG, GIF or PNG file. X does not support animated GIFs for profile images. If the image you want to use is not a file format that X supports, put it through a free image converter and choose one of X’s supported formats for conversion.

Profile X images cannot exceed 2MB and must be square. X recommends 400 x 400 pixels for your profile image, but any square image will work, as long as it’s no smaller than 400 x 400 pixels.

If you plan to upload a square image, leave some space around the edges. The image appears in a circle in X, and the corners of the square image will not appear in the circle.

Your best photo X

Choose a well-lit, high-quality image to represent you on X. A casual selfie works best for personal accounts. An official photo or company logo is appropriate for a business account. Keep a few things in mind:

  • Some of the most beautiful X profile pictures have a strong background that contrasts with the user’s face.
  • If you use X for business, consider conveying a short one- or two-word message or including a tell-tale graphic. A baker can hold a cake and a web designer can display a logo.
  • Once you upload an image, change it only rarely. When your followers see a consistent image over time, it builds your brand.
