By now, most of Twitter’s 217 million daily active users have probably heard the news: Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and a prolific Internet poster, has struck a deal to bought the social network for about 44 billion dollars.

Twitter employees reacted with shock and dismay on Monday as a new reality sunk in: Musk, a self-proclaimed defender of free speech and staunch critic of the social network, would be the company’s new owner.

Regular Twitter users are wondering what a Musk-owned platform would look like and what it would mean for online harassment, misinformation, democracy and — above all — their data privacy on the service.
