From December 22, a festival that unites music and architecture will once again bring big names of concert music to emblematic buildings in Rio de Janeiro and other cities of the country.
In its second edition, FIMA – Interactive Festival of Music and Architecture invites the public to live another immersive experience that unites music and architecture now in some of the most important palaces in Brazil. In addition to Rio de Janeiro, FIMA will also be present in the states of Maranhão, Para and Minas Gerais with art historians and architects paving the way for renowned Brazilian musicians to present musical works that dialogue with architecture, decorative arts and the history of these iconic buildings, which represent some of the most important material heritage of our country. Sponsored by the Vale Cultural Institute through the Federal Law for the Promotion of Culture, all FIMA presentations are free of charge. The Petit Trianon Palace, at the Brazilian Academy of Letters, and the Catete and Imperial palaces in Petrópolis are among the venues that will host the concerts in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The creator and artistic director of the event, the musician and cultural producer Pablo Castellar indicates that in this second edition most of the palaces from the colonial and imperial periods will be celebrated. “We will offer the public, through a fascinating and multi-sensory dialogue between the music and the architecture of FIMA, the opportunity to appreciate, value and build a sense of belonging in relation to these valuable cultural heritages of our society that over the centuries have also housed iconic characters. of our history”.
the opening concert
The opening concert of this new FIMA season will be held on Thursday, December 22, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the formidable replica of the Petit Trianon de Versailles – which, after hosting the French Pavilion at the International Centennial Exhibition of Independence in 1922, it was donated by the government of France, the following year, to the Brazilian Academy of Letters. The soprano Bruno de Sá, who has captivated the lyrical world with his rare voice and the virtuoso piano of maestro Priscila Bomfim, will perform in the hall where the immortals of the ABL will perform. The pair will be accompanied by comments from architect and professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Gustavo Rocha-Peixoto. It is considered “A powerful voice with honey tones (…) a real discovery” by the Brazilian magazine Concerto – in which she also appears on the cover of this December edition – and received praise from the French newspaper Le Monde (“the Brazilian soprano stunned the lyrical world…”), young Bruno de Sá stood out when he got OPER! 2020 Award in the “Best Discovery of the Year” category. As an Erato/Warner Classics exclusive artist, his first solo album “Roma Travestita” was released in September 2022, receiving acclaim from the press and audiences worldwide. The first woman and music director to conduct opera in the official season of Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro, pianist and conductor Priscila Bomfim has already conducted important Brazilian orchestras and, in 2022, premiered new operas by composers Mario Ferraro, Armando Lôbo, Arrigo Barnabas. and Tim Rescale. The program will take you on a journey through the history and architecture of the palace, from its conception in France – built in the 18th century by King Louis XV for his mistress, Madame de Pompadour, through the reign of Louis XVI , who offered it. to his wife Maria Antonieta – until arriving at the esplanade of the Castelo, in Rio de Janeiro, for the centenary celebrations of Independence, and then becoming the first seat of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Thus, works by composers from the 17th to the 21st century will be performed, from names such as Scarlatti, Broschi, Piccinni, Mozart, to the Brazilians Villa-Lobos, Ovalle, Santoro and Miranda. Academics will also be represented with music: “Azulão”, by composer Jayme Ovale with poetry by Manuel Bandeira, as well as Brazilian writers, such as “Retrato”, by Ronaldo Miranda with text by Cecília Meireles. The writer had all the merits, books and conditions to enter the ABL (but she did not, because at that time women were not yet admitted, which only happened on November 4, 1977, when Rachel de Queiroz took over). The writer was distinguished by the ABL in 1938 with the Olavo Bilac Prize and with the Machado de Assis Prize, posthumously, in 1965.
II FIMA – Schedule 2023

In January, the festival heads to the capital of Pará, where it will visit the Lauro Sodré Palace, with a performance by mezzo-soprano Carolina Faria and Belem-born pianist Ana Maria Adade. Commentary will be provided by historian and UFPA professor Aldrin Figueiredo. In April, FIMA arrives at Palacio dos Leões, in São Luiz (MA), with the participation of violinist Paulo Martelli and bringing works by Bach, Fernando Sor and Villa-Lobos. In May, Ouro Petro (MG) will finally host the Festival in a program to be announced soon. The experience of the second FIMA can also be lived virtually. In addition to all personal programming, there will be an online exhibition of the concerts (filmed in traditional format and in 360º), an online series will be launched with program notes for the concerts and interviews with guests and a podcast with musicians and musicians and the speakers. The achievements of the festival also include free music lessons, in person or at a distance, with artists invited to the event and “FIMA in school”, with the aim of raising children’s awareness, encouraging new ways of valuing their cultural identity, all this so that they better understand the importance of the historical heritage of their community.
