Ilminster Carnival returns with centenary edition

ILMINSTER’S Grand Carnival Procession will return this year after a two-year hiatus to celebrate its centenary.

The event will take place on Saturday, October 1, with the procession starting at 19:15.

The carnival is returning to Ilminster after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic and this year’s edition will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the carnival after it was first held in 1922.

A spokesman for Ilminster Carnival said: “We are delighted that the carnival is returning to Ilminster after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

“It’s an extremely special year for Ilminster Carnival as we celebrate our centenary.

“From our research we found that the carnival started in 1922 and has continued in one form or another for 100 years, originally called the Ilminster Hospital Carnival and the money raised went to the local hospital.

“We look forward to welcoming people to the streets of Ilminster for this year’s carnival.

“Although this year’s carnival will be a little smaller due to the two-year hiatus, behind the scenes we have continued to meet and organize for this year’s event.

“Carnival clubs have come together to produce entries this year after struggling to raise the vital funds needed over the past two years due to limited fundraising opportunities and ever-increasing costs.

“However, with all their hard work and carnival spirit, we’re sure they’ll put on a great show. We would like to thank all the clubs and participants who are part of this year’s historic Ilminster Carnival.

“We have various events taking place during this year’s carnival week.

“Our window dressing competition will run from Saturday 24th September to Saturday 1st October.

“The public can vote for their favorite window displays that will determine the overall winning window.”
