The purpose of National GeographicThe latest travel list, the best of the world 2023, is to inspire readers’ travel plans. That way, you can get a head start on the renewed travel landscape.

For 2023, the World’s Best list is focused on travel destinations and experiences that benefit tourists and the communities they visit.

County Wicklow, known as the Garden of Ireland, has entered this year’s family section National GeographicWorld’s Best 2023 List.

As stated on the National Geographic website, “our list highlights some of the most exciting and extraordinary experiences on the planet.”

In five categories, adventure, culture, nature, family and community, they’ve outlined the most stunning landscapes and cultural experiences you should have on your radar for 2023.

Global editors at the journal select 25 entries. Then, ten more from the UK edition are added.

The editor of National Geographic Traveler (UK), Pat Riddell, says: “The annual list reflects the travel landscape as we see it for the next 12 months.

“With options on your doorstep, a short hop to Europe or much further afield, this year’s 35 destinations offer insight into the wide range of experiences available to visitors from far and wide.”

In this year’s list, County Wicklow has entered the family category. It joins Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago and San Francisco.

The magazine praises Wicklow for being “filled with mountain trails for hikers and cyclists, grand Palladian palaces, wild waterfalls and an underrated coastline”.

Beyond the Trees, Avondale also gets a big mention for being home to Ireland’s tallest slide. It also features the “exciting new walkway that gently rises to immerse visitors in the tree canopy itself.”

This is a big factor for Wicklow appearing in the family category. The magazine points out, “the noises you hear splashing around inside are from adults and children alike.”

In the culture category, you’ll find routes like Italy’s Appian Way, where “The goal is a pilgrimage through history, with stops at picturesque villages and archaeological sites, and planned overnight accommodation at the end of each day’s journey.” .

For nature, the Scottish Highlands receive praise for their “rugged beauty”. Also, the movement for “returning the Highlands to its original forests, reintroducing the former flora and fauna in a process called ‘restoration'”.

In the adventure category, New Zealand is cited as “the country that brought you bungee jumping.” This adventure-worthy spot also has incredible skiing and biking trails.

Finally, for younger community groups, the Dodecanese Islands in Greece are rated. Cast “an alluring spell that flows from their rocky beauty and fiery history.” You can view the full World’s Best 2023 list here.
