It’s carnival time … Leeming Bar-style

A taste of the Caribbean was brought to a care home in a corner of North Yorkshire.

Staff and residents at Leeming Bar Grange, in Leeming Bar, decorated the house and garden to recreate the atmosphere of Notting Hill Carnival.

The annual celebration by London’s West Indian population was recreated at home, in Leeming Lane.

Residents enjoyed all the flavors of the Caribbean carnival, from street food to cocktails, with steel band music playing in the background.

The Notting Hill Carnival has been celebrated in London’s Kensington district since the mid-1960s, featuring huge sound systems and marching bands.

After a two-year absence due to the Covid pandemic, its return was seen as a good reason to celebrate in style, bringing the carnival to Leeming Bar.

Michelle Keep, general manager at the home, said: “Our residents love any excuse for a party, so when we told them we’d be having our own version of Notting Hill Carnival, they couldn’t wait!

“Many of our staff and residents can remember visiting carnivals over the years and everyone had a fantastic time reminiscing about their rides and escapades!”

Resident Jean Peniston said: “We had such a bright and beautiful day.

“I loved dancing to Caribbean music!”

It is part of the home’s “diverse life enrichment program” that aims to keep residents active and provide a daily choice of physically, mentally and spiritually engaging activities tailored to residents’ interests and abilities.

The home, which offers residential, dementia and respite care, is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers.
