Minister of National Security Dr Horace Chang has stated that the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) administration is not engaged in the practice of using the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) as a political tool.

Speaking at the JLP St Elizabeth parish conference on Sunday, Chang said that using police force in that manner cannot result in achieving peace in the country.

“We [are] not using the police force as a political team”, he said.

“You and I have known this in politics for a long time. We know how it goes! He used to be the Minister of National Security almost once in an election for a party,” said the government minister, who is also the deputy prime minister.

“The police were used as a tool of politics!” he further suggested, without substantiating his claims.

Chang also argued that using police force in that way cannot achieve security.

The Deputy Prime Minister added: “You can’t get security like this, you can’t get peace like this, you can’t get peace without justice.

“Opportunity for our youth, yes, but we cannot treat security as a partisan political issue,” he said.

Chang, noting that the members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force are from the ranks of the citizens, said that the working conditions of law enforcers must be significantly improved.

This, he said, the Government is working to address.

“They are our police force, your police force, your friends. They are not strangers from abroad. They are Jamaicans who are seeking to maintain law and order.

“We have to offer them good working conditions,” Chang said.
