John Leguizamo calls to boycott James Franco’s new film where he’ll play Fidel Castro

John Leguizamo didn’t like the new one James Franco film audiences, even calling for a boycott due to the lack of Latino representation.

James Franco is said to play the Cuban revolutionary leader turned dictator Fidel Castro in the future Alina of Cuba.

He is a champion of Latin culture

Leguizamo has been a cultivator of Latino culture, being proud of his Latin American heritage, he even has a Netflix special called bluntly “John Leguizamo’s Latin History of Morons” where he educates the viewer on the aforementioned topic from a teacher’s perspective.

And of course, being a strong supporter of Latino rights and identity, he considered this an insult to the culture and publicly shared his displeasure on Instagram.

He accuses Hollywood of stealing the narrative

“How is this still going on? How is Hollywood excluding us but also stealing our narratives? No more appropriation of Hollywood and broadcasters! Boycott! This failed! Plus serious hard story to tell without glorification that will it was wrong!”

He continued, “I don’t have a problem with Franco, but he’s not Latino!”

After its release went viral and is now reaching 20,000 likes, it even got the attention of The View’s Ana Navarro, who also supported his motion to boycott the film.

“I’d like to think that no Latino actor worth his salt would sign up to play and glorify a murderous dictator who terrorized the people of Cuba for six decades,” commented Ana Navarro. “For both of the reasons you articulated, I join you in the boycott.”

It will start shooting in August

The film will begin shooting in mid-August in Colombia, specifically Cartagena, where its colonial landscape represents a mid-century Cuba before the revolution that began in 1953 and ultimately ended on January 1, 1956 with Castro taking over Batista’s Cuba and implanting a communist regime.
