State Sen. James Sanders Jr. (with Assemblymember Khaleel Anderson and City Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks Powers) invites you to the party of the year as it presents the Queens Carnival, formerly the Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways, on Saturday, August 27, 2022 in Mas costumes, moko jhumbies, singers, dancers, island food, a fun run, sandcastle building contest, fireworks display and much more. You don’t want to miss this!
The party is in Far Rockaway, but you’ll feel like you’re in the Caribbean as we bring together the people and cultures that make Queens an iconic melting pot and the most diverse neighborhood in the city. We hope you will join us and bring your family, friends, children, grandchildren. Everyone is welcome!
One of the featured artists will be Destra Garcia, best known for her Soca hit, “Lucy.” Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world, and what better way to celebrate that diversity, especially in Rockaway, than with a family-friendly Caribbean carnival that welcomes all people. Out of many, we are one. This is the motto of Trinidad – “Together we aspire, together we achieve”.
For those of you who are not familiar with the concept of a Caribbean Carnival, it is an event that takes place in many countries around the world. It’s a colorful and creative way to celebrate Caribbean culture and originally started as a last chance to release all the energy and joyful emotions before the 40 days of Lent penitence.
As is traditional in the carnival culture, this year we will highlight two countries. Our honorees will be Trinidad, known for its steel pans and Caribbean dance – Limbo, and Antigua, which is famous for its many beaches.
This year, Queens Carnival is presented in partnership with the Western American Indian Day Carnival Association (WIADCA), Rockaway Community Development Corporation (RDRC), REMA4US, DredSurfer Grill, New York City Parks Department, Police Presence 101 of the New York Police Department and Members of the Queen’s Carnival Committee.
The Queens Carnival will take place on Saturday, August 27, 2022 starting at 11:00 a.m., beginning at Mott Avenue and Beach 21st Street and ending at the 17th Street Beach Boardwalk.
Carnival Parade – 11am
Laugh, Dash, Splash Boardwalk Race – 9:30am – 11am
Sand Castle Building Contest – 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Fireworks Display – Beginning at Sunset (Sponsored by City Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks Powers)
