Organizational context
The UNDP Regional Service Center for Africa is located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With additional offices in Dakar, Senegal and Nairobi, Kenya, it serves 45 Country Offices in sub-Saharan Africa, develops high-quality knowledge and policy, and is the organization’s main interface with regional and continental bodies such as the African Union and the Regional Economic Community. Communities. The Center also implements a continent-wide Regional Program that supports Africa’s transformation agenda by: 1) enhancing inclusive and sustainable growth, 2) expanding political participation and giving everyone a voice, and 3) developing institutions of responsible that provide the desired services and promote comprehensive processes of state-society dialogue. UNDP-Regional Service Center consists of about 120 national and international staff. JPO staff will be based on the Gender Team. The gender team consists of 9 national and international staff including the regional advisor and the team leader.
The Gender Team of the Bureau of Policy and Program Support (BPPS) is the institutional anchor of UNDP’s work on gender equality and women’s empowerment. it provides policy advice and technical support to all UNDP Bureaus and leadership on how to mainstream gender in all areas of their work. The gender team works to implement gender equality as a core objective of UNDP through a two-pronged approach (i) mainstreaming gender in all key practices; and, (ii) dedicated interventions that empower women and promote gender equality. In addition, the Gender Team is responsible for all corporate planning, supporting corporate programming, reporting on gender and supporting senior management in ensuring accountability for gender mainstreaming. Finally, the Gender Team supports the administrator and senior management in addressing gender equality and the empowerment of women in their convening and representational functions.
Purpose of the position
JPO staff will be part of the Gender Team at the Regional Service Center, UNDP, reporting directly to the Regional Gender Adviser and Team Leader. The Gender and Communication Specialist will work closely with all staff in the Gender Team and with the regional Media and Communication Team to support the positioning of RCSA’s gender work and contribute to the overall implementation of the regional advocacy strategy.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1) Contribute to the overall implementation of the regional program on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa and promote positive results in this regard (40%)
Example tasks:
Contribute to advocacy and promote the visibility of the Advancement for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Africa, the Spotlight Initiative and the Regional Program
Work across gender team thematic areas to identify and document best practices, lessons learned for further knowledge building and dissemination.
Assess communication needs and priorities for the RSCA Gender Team
Develop and produce communication and advocacy materials on the regional GEWE project in different thematic areas of the Gender Team and coordinate its distribution.
Design and layout of materials (eg reports, posters, infographics, images, dynamic presentations, etc.) for internal and external audiences, as well as for presentation, print and online use.
2) Effective communication and advocacy to facilitate knowledge building, awareness-raising activities for the advancement of gender equality and the empowerment of women in the region (40%)
Example tasks:
Generate knowledge, data and information from ongoing programs and projects and contribute to the development of Policy Briefs, fact sheets, press releases, media and communication products and tools applying gender sensitive communication principles.
Facilitating knowledge building and knowledge sharing including the use of new technologies
Ensure appropriate communications before, during and after regional and national events such as knowledge sharing meetings, seminars, trainings, conferences and other special events related to the Project.
Help collect ‘top change’ stories to support annual reporting and edit/promote project-specific and related news updates.
Promote the project’s digital presence through social media and UNDP’s existing Twitter account, LinkedIn and Facebook pages.
3) Supports advocacy, knowledge building and communication efforts in support of the Regional Service Center in implementing the RBA Communication Strategy (20%)
Example tasks:
Contribute to the development of regional and global communication products, tools and visibility materials related to GEWE and its thematic areas
Implement communication programs to publicize priority issues and/or key events, to include designing communication strategies (including social media), coordinating efforts, monitoring and reporting on progress, taking appropriate follow-up actions, and analyzing the outcome
Provide input for regular monthly reports, stories, articles, etc.
Initiate, design, edit communication materials, including infographics and multimedia products using UNDP communication branding standards
Coordinate with regional office communications team to ensure gender mainstreaming and data on women’s empowerment, new issues and progress are well incorporated in all communications, advocacy initiatives
Performs other duties as and when required and assigned by supervisor.

Requests
educatIon
- Master’s Degree or equivalent Advanced Degree in Gender Studies, Sociology, Anthropology and/or Communications, Mass/Media Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field.
Experience, knowledge and skills
- A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience, ideally with at least one year of regional or development experience in similar development contexts
- Experience with media and social media software, applications and communication tools with computer literacy, particularly related to professional office software packages (Microsoft Office).
- Experience in graphic design for digital and print platforms
- Demonstrated experience in communicating Gender Equality work tailored to diverse audiences is a distinct advantage
- Experience in UN related communications
Language requirements
- Excellent working knowledge of English and French (as communication/advocacy products will be in both languages).
