Ten-time world and three-time Olympic judo champion Teddy Riner, who injured his ankle in August, announced on Monday that he had to withdraw from the 2022 World Championships scheduled in Tashkent from October 6 to 13.

“Sadly I was afraid, but the medical examinations carried out today have confirmed that I will not be able to resume judo for several weeks, which rules out my participation in the upcoming World Championships in Tashkent,” Riner, 33, wrote on Twitter. .

“Two years away from the Olympics, I can’t risk it. “The appointment has been made for the next World Championship next May in Qatar,” added the French sports magnate.

In his short message, Riner does not give details about the injury that forces him to miss the most important meeting of the year.

In late August, during an internship in Rabat, Morocco, he injured his ankle during a confrontation when a training partner fell on his ankle.

The French Judo Federation and PSG, his club, later revealed that the sprain required him to “wear a headscarf and use crutches for three weeks”, while ensuring his participation in the 2022 World Championships was “preserved”.

Riner, the over-100kg bronze medalist and crowned Olympic team champion in August 2021 in Tokyo, has not competed in a world championship since 2017.

In July, he won the Budapest Grand Slam, his first international since the Tokyo Olympics.
