- A smartphone is a lifesaver for most people. Make sure it stays on during an outage by buying a power bank or battery backup.
- Turn off major appliances such as water heaters, stoves and air conditioning units. Unplug all televisions, stereos, microwaves and computers. These systems and equipment can be damaged if there is a power surge.
- Get to know your main electrical panel. You may need to turn off the main breaker or reset the breakers after an outage.
- Leave a light on so you know when power is restored to your home.
- Remove candles for flashlights or flashlights. Keep plenty of extra batteries on hand.
- If you are using a portable generator, be sure to use extension cords that are properly rated (outdoor, electrical load, and length).
