Tennessee’s fall schedule is highlighted by a pair of events taking place at Rocky Top, beginning with the 2022 ITA Ohio Valley Regional on Oct. 19. The event runs through October 23rd and will be played at Barksdale Stadium, Goodfriend Tennis Center and various locations around the Knoxville area. The Lady Vols have both the defending singles champion and the runner-up in last year’s edition of the tournament in Elsa Thomas AND Rebecca Mertena.
UT has placed at least one student-athlete in the last two ITA Fall National Championships as Kaitlin Staines and The McGiffin trick qualified for the event in 2019 after a runner-up finish at the All-American Championships. The event was canceled in the 2020-21 season due to the global COVID-19 health crisis.
The head coach Alison Ojedain her seventh year at the helm of the program, keeps her team at home to finish the month of October, awaiting the Tennessee Fall Invitational on Oct. 28-30.
“As excited as I am to see our girls compete later this month, I’m more excited to see how we continue to develop over the next three weeks,” Ojeda said. “As a group, I feel really excited about our entire program. We have added three new student-athletes to the roster and each one of them brings a lot of personality to the team.”
Fall bidding begins later this month at the Wolfpack Invitational/Ranked Spotlight +1 in Cary, NC, hosted by NC State. A season ago, now head coach McGiffin won the singles competition, capturing the B tie crown.
However, with competition on the horizon, the Lady Vols are hard at work, attending to the small details and growing in their skills.
“Jarryd Chaplin is really focusing on working on individual skills, while I focus on our team’s mental strength and the ability to compete at a high level when the going gets tough,” continued Ojeda. “We have a new head coach. strength in Ryan Metzger who is doing an amazing job learning the basics of lifting and running and she brings a burst of energy to training every day.”
Another highlight on the calendar this fall is the ITA All-American Championships, also played in Cary, NC. The event runs from October 3-9 and draws for the event will be released at a later date.
