The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has extended to the province of Santo Domingo de Tsáchilas the state of emergency decreed last Tuesday in Guayas and Esmeraldas in response to the violence started there, where deaths and injuries have been confirmed in the context of protests for the transfer of prisoners.

Thus, Santo Domingo de Tsáchilas adheres to a curfew imposed from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. (local time) and other emergency security and control measures.

“The National Government will take all the necessary decisions to maintain peace in the country and will fight head-on against terrorism and organized crime,” Ecuador’s General Secretariat of Communication said on its social media.

For his part, Lasso assured Thursday that he had kept his word to implement strict measures against recent episodes of violence recorded in the country’s largest prison by transferring hundreds of inmates.

Ecuador has been the scene of a series of violent acts in the provinces of Guayas and Esmeraldas for several days that have resulted in the death of at least five police officers and for which more than 50 suspects have already been arrested, three of them in custody . .
