Lasso signs a Communication Law to recover freedom of press in Ecuador

The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has signed this Friday the final text of the Communication Law which ends the previous regulation, nicknamed the ‘Gag Law’, with which he hopes to recover press freedom so that the media. can “unmask the narco-politicians” operating inside and outside the country, without receiving threats.

“We don’t want a society in which the media operates under threats. We do not want a society where content is influenced or controlled by politicians, much less by narco-politicians. We want a free society to think and express ourselves,” he assured at an event held in the port city of Guayaquil, according to the newspaper ‘El Telégrafo’.

Lasso has emphasized that the regulatory text puts an end to the control bodies and preliminary censorship of the code approved in June 2013, during the administration of Rafael Correas.

For this reason, he pointed out the opponents of this reform for “claiming to destabilize Ecuador” and not showing solidarity with the attacks suffered by the Police and the army from organized crime gangs.

“The increase in drug trafficking has been proportional to the human meanness of some leaders. Today we live the consequences of that perverted relationship,” he said on Friday, after assuring that this law is vital “to build the peace that Ecuador needs.”

“Today, on one side of the political map, those who seek to favor crime, organized gangs and drug trafficking have been identified. On the other hand, there are those who are pro-democracy, pro-people, pro-freedom,” he said.
