The city of Basse-Pointe and Cap Nord have published an educational booklet entitled Hippolyte Morestin (1869-1919): a Martinican surgeon, a pioneer in plastic and aesthetic surgery, which relates the career and descendants of this great unknown surgeon.

Originally from Basse-Pointe where he spent his childhood, Hippolyte Morestin was a very famous physician in Paris during the Belle Époque. Specializing in surgery of the digestive system, joints as well as tumors and cancer, he was among the first to give a purely aesthetic dimension to his operations. But it was during the First World War that he became world famous for his dedication to repairing and reconstructing the skulls and faces of unfortunate soldiers disfigured by bullets and shrapnel.

This twenty-page booklet was produced in partnership with the Martinique Society for the History of Medicine and the Canopé network. Including many illustrations, it is intended for schools, libraries, documentation centers, associations… of France.
