Leslie Named to Canada U-20 Roster for FIFA Women’s World Cup

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The second defender Annika Leslie of the West Virginia University women’s soccer team has been named to Canada’s national women’s team roster for the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

The biennial championships will take place from August 10 to 28 in Costa Rica, and Leslie and the team will compete among the 16 nations competing for this year’s title. Canada was drawn into Group C and opens competition against Korea Republic on August 11.

“We continue to be so excited and proud of Annika for earning these incredible opportunities to represent her country on the international stage,” WVU Coach. Nikki Izzo-Brown said. “She continues to work hard towards her goals and I’m proud to see her achieve another great achievement.”

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Leslie was recently named to Canada’s U-20 roster for the 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-20 Championship in February. She previously participated in Canada’s National Team Program as a member of the U-17 and U-15 squads and also served as a starter for the U-17 team during the 2019 Mexico tour.

During her first season with the Mountaineers, Leslie appeared in 14 games for WVU while earning the starting nod in five contests. She tallied 632 minutes played in her first season. This fall, she helped WVU’s defense record 11 shutouts on the year while allowing just 12 opposing goals all season.
