Hurricane Roslyn was downgraded to a Category 3 after weakening just before making landfall on the Pacific coast of Mexico, a bulletin from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday.

The storm slowed by nearly 5 mph (8 km/h) to reach 125 mph (205 km/h), but with stronger winds, according to the NHC.

Roslyn is now “a Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale,” which has a 5, he added.

Along the west coast of Mexico, localities are ready. The NHC warned of potentially damaging winds and flash flooding.

The storm was Sunday morning about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southwest of the city of Tepic, with maximum sustained winds of 202 km/h and moving north at about 26 km/h, the NHC said in its 9 a.m. update. GMT.

According to the same source, it is expected to hit the coast of Nayarit state on Sunday morning.

“Little change in intensity is expected before it makes landfall and then a rapid fading is expected,” the NHC said.

“On the forecast track, the eye of Roslyn will approach the coast of west-central Mexico, likely touching the coast of the Mexican state of Nayar on Sunday morning,” the center said.

“Roslyn could have life-threatening consequences with significant coastal inundation near and east of where the storm will make landfall,” the NHC continued, warning of “powerful and destructive surges.”

Mexican authorities have issued a preliminary alert in the Pacific coastal states of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Sinaloa.

Victor Hugo Roldan, civil defense director for Jalisco state, told reporters Saturday that several hundred people had been evacuated from the town of La Huerta, near the hurricane’s projected path.

Jalisco, which is expected to receive up to 25 centimeters of rain in some places, has set up shelters in the towns of Cabo Corrientes, La Huerta and the tourist resort of Puerto Vallarta.

Businesses in the resort town began to close on Saturday afternoon and residents rushed to make last-minute preparations.

However, tourists were visible on the beaches on Saturday afternoon or searching in vain for open bars and restaurants.

For Graciano Pena, a 59-year-old mall manager, the memory of Hurricane Kenna in 2002, which made landfall at Category 4 and killed four people, is still fresh.

“After this experience, we heed every warning and make preparations in advance,” he said.

Roslyn could make landfall near San Blas, a fishing town of about 40,000.

Tropical cyclones hit Mexico every year on its Pacific and Atlantic coasts, usually between May and November.

At the end of May, Agatha, the first storm of the season in the Pacific, hit the coast of the state of Oaxaca (in the south), where heavy rains in mountain towns killed 11 people.

In October 1997, Category 4 Hurricane Pauline claimed more than 200 lives on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
