Man shot near Carnival celebration, injuries life-threatening, Boston police say

A man was seriously injured in a second shooting reported in the Harambee Park area Saturday evening, according to Officer Kim Tavares, a Boston police spokeswoman.

The area is where the city’s 49th Caribbean Carnival celebration was underway for most of the day.

The shooting was reported near the intersection of Westview Road and Blue Hill Avenue at 5:41 p.m

The victim was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Tavares said.

An investigation is underway and no arrests have been made, she said.

Earlier Saturday, one person was shot at J’ouvert, a parade held early on the morning of Carnival. According to the police, the person suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden told reporters at the scene of the evening shooting that an officer was in the area when shots were fired. He said that the 31-year-old victim remained in critical condition around 8:00 p.m

The shooting erupted while many people were attending the festival nearby, he said.

“I hesitate to make any connection between this and the Caribbean festival, but obviously there were still a lot of people out and about because of the festival,” he said.

Hayden asked anyone with information to call Boston police or the Crimestoppers tip line at 1-800-494-TIPS.
