The New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board will conduct adult mosquito abatement tonight
NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) will conduct adult mosquito abatement tonight, weather permitting, at the following locations:
- Gentilly in the area bounded by I-610, Gentilly Boulevard, Franklin Avenue, Lakeshore Drive and Bayou St.
- New Orleans East in the area bounded by I-10, Bullard Avenue, Chef Menteur Highway and Crowder Boulevard
Tonight’s mosquito abatement activities will target A mosquito with five sides, the main vector of West Nile virus (WNV) in Orleans Parish. The virus continues to circulate in local mosquitoes despite an overall reduction in mosquito numbers in recent weeks. The board urges residents to reduce the risk of mosquito bites by using EPA-registered and CDC-approved mosquito repellents when outdoors, especially at night when mosquitoes carrying WNV are most active.
Even though it hasn’t rained recently, mosquitoes can breed in a small amount of water and breeding sites can be well hidden. NOMTRCB requires residents to check the areas around the house and yard at least once a week and return all containers holding water. Make sure rain barrels are covered with netting or treated with mosquito netting. Return children’s toys, water tables and pools when not in use. Empty and replace water in outdoor pet bowls frequently. Clean the sides of containers and fountains to remove mosquito eggs. Report standing water, unmaintained fountains and pools, waterlogged construction sites and discarded tires to 311.

Protect yourself
- Reduce exposure to mosquitoes by limiting outdoor activities between dusk and dawn.
- Use air conditioning or sit in the airflow of an outside fan when possible
- Make sure window and door screens are in good condition to prevent mosquitoes from entering the home.
- Use CDC-approved repellents that contain EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or lemon-eucalyptus oil.
- When using repellent, always follow the recommendations on the product label.
Protect your home
- Eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed around your home and yard by emptying all outdoor containers at least weekly.
- Make sure pools and fountains are functional and circulating.
- Remove trash and clutter and return any objects that can hold water, such as kiddie pools, buckets, empty trash cans, children’s toys, or planter trays.
- Change the water weekly in non-removable containers such as birdbaths, pet water bowls or non-functioning fountains.
- Clean the sides of containers to remove any mosquito eggs that may have been deposited.
- Rain barrels and other water collection devices should be checked and collected water should be used within a week.
- Aerate decorative pools, fountains and sugar bowls, or fill them with fish or mosquitoes.
