Men’s Tennis Lands Sebastian Rey as Assistant Coach – LSU

Baton Rouge, The. – Sebastian Rey, a native of Wantage, United Kingdom, has been named LSU’s assistant men’s tennis coach, head coach Danny Bryan announced Friday.

“We are incredibly fortunate to bring Sebastian on board,” said Bryan. “He is a proven coach who will have an immediate impact on our program. Sebastian is an expert in relationship building, talent evaluation and player development. I can’t wait to see the positive impact he will have on the boys on and off the field.”

In his time in San Diego, Rey helped lead the Toreros to one of the team’s best seasons in program history. During the team’s monumental run in 2022, USD was ranked 17th in the ITA team rankings during the season and finished 19th nationally, its highest final ranking in 32 years. In 2022, Rey also helped USD win the WCC regular season and conference championships and reach the NCAA Round of 32.

Rey helped USD land a top 15 recruiting class according to tennisrecruiting.net. They ranked fifth in 2022 and 14th in 2021.

With the Toreros, Rey also helped coach the No. 1 singles in the country, August Holmgren. Holmgren’s list of honors while with Rey includes 2021 ITA Fall National Champion, ITA All-American Finalist and 2021 and 2022 Singles All-American. Rey’s coaching led Holmgren to the singles championship match of the NCAA, where he fell to Florida’s Ben Shelton.

Rey also led team no. 9 ITA ranked doubles August Holmgren/Gui Osorio.

Prior to his time with USD, Rey served as an assistant coach at Tennessee State University for two seasons.

While on staff, Rey helped the Blue Raiders to a 40-17 record. In 2019, MTSU won its first Conference USA title in program history after defeating the No. 1 Florida Atlantic. Rey received Ohio Valley Assistant Coach of the Year honors for his contributions to the Raiders’ success.

Prior to his coaching career, Rey played four seasons at Tulane from 2013-2017. During his time with the Green Waves, he posted a record of 85-39 in singles and 59-46 in doubles and helped the team climb to a national ranking of No. 18.

Rey earned a list of accomplishments and recognitions during his playing career, including ITA Southern Region Player of the Year, three-time LSWA First Team All-Louisiana and Second Team All-Conference USA. Rey cracked the ITA singles rankings for the first time as a senior, reaching as high on the list as No. 110. He finished his career ranked No. 66 nationally in doubles.
