What is Miami Carnival all about?
After all, the Miami Carnival is a celebration of life. A celebration of cultures and a celebration of every individual. There’s no time to worry about the cares of the world when you’re drinking great rum and dancing until your feet hurt. It’s as much an escape from your ordinary life as it is a celebration of other great cultures. It should be experienced, not just explained.
Taking place this year on October 1-9, Miami Carnival 2022 focuses on entertainment, the future and a strong past rooted in the diverse cultures of the Caribbean region.
This year’s event heralds a return to the freer and less restrictive style of past carnivals before Covid-19 affected its operations. It is a time when people from different countries and cultures can come together to celebrate who they are and share art, costume, music, food and more with visitors from all over the world.
The four parts of the Miami Carnival
There really is something for everyone in the carnival experience. The four unique events that make up the whole thing include:
- of Little carnival focuses on children’s dance troupes and more family-friendly entertainment options.
- Panorama includes demonstrations and steel cork competitions you’ll never forget.
- flatten out celebrates freedom and the Mas Day parade with lots of dancing, messy colors and costumes and lots of Calypso bands.
- of Parade of Bands and Costumes is what many people most associate Carnaval with. Bands of Mas (Masquerader) and people in lively and scantily clad costumes display their skills and enthusiasm through art in motion.
Some of the bands that will play the Carnival festivities include Gen X, D-Junction, Freaks of Mas, Hysteria, Ramajay Mas, JuJu International, and more. Together, masquerade groups are one of the biggest draws of any carnival.
They combine interesting music with flavors from different Caribbean cultures, alone or mixed together in unique ways with extraordinary costumes from international designers.
They tell a story as they parade through the streets and around the venues and the audience can’t help but get caught up in the excitement and interactivity of the experience.
