WACO – In its first game, the University of Minnesota football team (0-0-1, 0-0-0 Big Ten) opened the 2022 season with a 1-1 tie against Baylor University (0-0-1, 0- 0- 0 Big 12) at Betty Lou Mays Field on Thursday night.
McKenna Buisman AND Khyah Harper led the Gophers in three-pointers, followed by Sophia Romine who cut two. It was also a night of firsts, such as the Romine transfer and Cesarone cage made their first appearance as Gophers along with the freshman Sophia Barjesteh.
“We are disappointed with the draw,” said the coach Erin Chastain. “I thought we played a great first half and second start. When we missed some chances, we lost a little bit of our discipline. But that’s our starting point and we’re looking forward to competing against TCU, learning lessons. and becoming better than this.”
A quiet first half was highlighted by chances from Lauren Donovan, Buisman and Harper. Baylor matched Minnesota’s offensive drive, but the only shot on frame was saved by Megan Plaschko.
The Gophers’ momentum picked up in the second half in the 52nd minute with a goal from Harper. Harper hit it just outside the 18-yard box. Minnesota kept up the pressure, adding four more shots on the Bears goalie.
Despite posting just one save, Plaschko came up big, scattering numerous opportunities Baylor had in the final third. During the 80sth Minutes, she held Baylor scoreless until sophomore Haven Terry tied the score.
Minnesota’s next contest is Aug. 21 on the road against TCU (0-0-1, 0-0-0 Big 12). The Horned Frogs will face Big Ten opponent Wisconsin.
