In any competition, the national costume competition is a chance for countries to showcase their culture to the whole world.
This year’s Miss Universe pageant is no different, as the candidates took to the stage in eye-catching national costumes that left eyes wanting for more.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) lists 15 incredible ensembles that destroyed the preliminary stage of the pageant today, January 12, 2023 (PH time).

Guatemala
Ivana Batchelor’s Miss Universe Guatemala 2022 national costume looks as fierce as the roar of a jaguar.
Paying homage to Guatemala’s rich history, the costume features the country’s majestic El Gran Jaguar pyramid as well as the Mayan calendar.
Completing the look is a jade necklace and the face of a jaguar, which is the universal symbol of Mayan culture.
Argentina
One look is not enough to appreciate the greatness of Miss Universe 2022 Argentina Barbara Cabrera’s waterfall-inspired national costume.
With its thin body is the Iguazú Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, represented by synthetic arches.
Embroidering the part with Crystal rhinestones, beads and fringe are all handmade.
Switzerland
Miss Universe Switzerland 2022 Alia Guindi’s national costume is a real treat for anyone with a sweet tooth, like it celebrates chocolate in all its glory.
The colored pearls compliment the light veil surrounding her embellished pants.
The accents on her shoulders pay homage to cocoa leaves.
US
The inspiration behind Miss Universe USA 2022 R’Bonney Gabriel’s national costume is rooted in the waves of feminism, highlighting the advancement of women’s positions at important global events.
“When Americans walked on the moon in 1969, it was one small step for a man. Today, women are more involved as leaders in getting the US back to the moon,” the commentator said.
Representing her hometown, Houston’s At NASA’s Johnson Space Center, the aspiring astronaut’s suit was designed by Filipino designer Patrick Isorena.

Trinidad and Tobago
If the goal is to stand out, then Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago 2022 Tya Jané Ramey says she understood the task.
Standing many feet above the rest of the delegates, Tya dazzles in a costume inspired by her homeland’s history, specifically The country’s famous carnival, which it is known to have been born out of necessity, mockery, pride and revolution.
To celebrate all that Carnival stands for, the ensemble features a jester dressed in a golden dress embellished with mist layered ribbons.
Belize
Another symbolism of the intense predatory jaguar takes shape in the creation of Ashley Lightburn’s Miss Universe Belize 2022 national costume.
Ashley’s outfit represents the world’s first and only jaguar reserve, the Belize Jaguar Reserve.
Located in Cockscomb Pond, it is home to jaguars, parrots, black howler monkeys and toucans, among others.
It is a reminder of the rich natural resources found in Central American countries.
Puerto Rico
Looking futuristic in her shiny all-white armor, Ashley Cariño’s Miss Universe Puerto Rico 2022 look ias inspired by Puerto Rico’s Arecibo Observatory radio telescope.
Its iconic status in the field of astronomy is all thanks to the record of being i the largest single radio telescope in the world, until it was surpassed in 2016.
The suit celebrates the scientific community for its ongoing astronomical research.
Bahamas
Angel Cartwright’s Miss Universe Bahamas 2022 costume commemorates a historic moment in 1973, when the islands of the Bahamas declared their independence.
A flag was then raised in the Bahamanian sky and Clifford Park – a famous park in their country–was surrounded by fireworks.
Commenter wrote: “Tonight, this delegate celebrates 50 years of independence. Let those fireworks fly high in the sky.”
Bahrain

Evlin’s national costume represents the golden celebration of Bahrain’s founding as a nation.
Although it is the smallest country in the Middle East, Bahrain is among the richest in the world, with the second highest density of millionaires on Earth, according to global management firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
Colombia
Miss Universe Colombia 2022 Marchto Fernanda Aristizábal transforms into a fiery phoenix queen.
Embellished with 1,100 Swarovski crystals and embellished with beads and feathers, María’s national costume represents a land of beautiful landscapes and breathtaking sunsets.
Philippines
Miss Universe Philippines 2022 Celeste Cortesi becomes a heroine for a day as she steps into the shoes of classic Filipino superhero Darna.

Ukraine
Miss Universe Ukraine 2022 Viktoriia Apanasenko’s The Warrior of Light costume symbolizes Ukraine’s struggle for freedom.
It is inspired by Archangel Michael, who is a guardian of soldiers and is considered to be one of the protectors of the country as the patron saint of the capital of Ukraine, Kiev.
Vietnam

The beautifully designed costume is made entirely from natural and eco-friendly materials.
Indonesia
Connoting victory, Miss Universe Indonesia 2022 Laksmi De-Neefe Suardana wears a sea-inspired look for her national costume.
The ensemble is influenced by Phinisi carnival, a symbol of Indonesia’s maritime heritage. It has been said thatLittle Indonesians were the first sailors.
It also stands for Indonesian motto: “On the sea, we are victorious”.
