Ending the series of posts from the trip to New York, our favorite topic: fashion! Of course, New York breathes fashion, and I love seeing the trends put into practice and the personal style of New Yorkers. While Paris is more fashion, London is more alternative and Milan is more creative, New York is possible fashion, that near, far but pop fashion, you know?
And for me a great exercise – and traveler satisfaction – is sitting in a restaurant with a good wine in hand, watching beautiful and stylish people. Notice what they wear and how they communicate fashion. With this, I singled out 3 trends that I saw the most this May – aka spring before summer – In city!
AFTER ACADEMY FASHION
By far the most prevalent style I’ve seen: gym clothes, but of course they don’t go or come from it, I’ll explain. Cycling shorts, T-shirts, T-shirts, leggings, all that traditional uniform in every gym around the world, New Yorkers use to go around the corner, to walk, to shop, to drink wine with friends. It is a uniform with a comfortable and most current way impossible. Always in more neutral and soft tones.
And the cat dance is in style, I saw a lot of oversized jackets, shoes with a masculine feel, tractor heels, good old sneakers, but also gym sneakers in a super chic version. Accessories include chunky necklaces, chains, bangles and bags are more minimalist, with a touch of Bottega, but lots of Prada and even Jacquemus.
Surely this is the uniform of the girls downtown between the streets of SoHo and the West Village. Speaking of brands, the bags I saw the most were from Alo, a brand beloved by celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Taylor Swift, it started with yoga clothes and now encompasses this universe of mindfulness and wellness in gym wear in a minimalist way. elegant and comfortable. .
MINIMALISM AND DISCRETION
I find it very curious that in these pandemic times, much has been said about “dopamine fashion” and an eventual colorful and fun fashion after the quarantine days, but do you know how many times I saw this in NY? Zero! Fashion seems to be on the opposite path, serious, restrained, with minimal lines and something more masculine. How did I interpret this?
A bit of this trend academic above which, it is worth saying, it always comes in neutral and sober tones, always combining the third pieces with an oversized sports jacket, shoulder pads, etc. Coats are also made of nylon, men’s shirts and, in general, social slacks, the cargo version, jeans with a vintage feel and always on the more 1990s side without much frocks. This ideal definitely remains strong among ny girls and refers to a lot of the “old money” aesthetic we’re talking about here.
O CLOTHES OF THE SUN TAL
If hipsters have this characteristic outfit, there is also room for romantics. Have you heard of The Nap Dress®? That’s right, trademark and all, the dress created by New York brand Hill House emerged during the pandemic to provide the stylish comfort of staying at home. The idea was to create a chic outfit, with a romantic print and that would serve to stay at home, but in the future to go out regularly.
The dress was very successful, it sold extremely well, so seasonally the brand launches new prints and fabrics of the same dress, which, let’s face it, has no innovative shape (lastex skirt and 3 marias), but won the favor of New Yorkers and , despite having previously known the brand’s history, I immediately noticed the dress – and similar versions – among places that like a neater look, even if it’s casual!
The most interesting thing about New York is that we can analyze a trend and imagine that it is completely possible to be inspired by our Brazilian universe!
