The first residents of an apartment complex being developed in a former Endicott Johnson Shoe Company building in Johnson City could move in as early as next year.
Syracuse developer Matthew Paulus said the target occupancy date for the Victory Lofts project is Jan. 1.
A model unit has just been completed in the massive building that will eventually have 156 apartments.
About 150 workers were busy at the project site west of Lester Avenue on Thursday.
Paulus said he is excited to have the opportunity to “redevelop this historic asset,” which had been used by EJ for several decades. In recent years, the building was empty. For a while, it was used as a space for storing vehicles and other items.
The building was purchased by Paulus Development for $1.6 million in March 2020. Paulus outlined his plans for the property a few months later.
Preliminary construction work on the $40 million project began last summer. There is a lot of activity inside and outside the building right now.
People walking and driving by the site in recent weeks have noticed the exterior painting that has been done on the east end of the structure and the installation of new windows.
Paulus previously transformed the old Ansco Camera Factory building on Emma Street in Binghamton into a complex of 100 apartments and commercial space.
The apartment units will be located on the second to fifth floors of the building with parking on the ground floor. Commercial space is planned for the sixth floor of the complex.
Paulus said his company has received many inquiries from people who have expressed interest in renting an apartment at Victory Lofts.
