Ashmini Munisar says it is a “tremendous honour” to lead the West Indies U19 Women’s team into battle in the inaugural edition of the ICC Women’s U19 World Cup T20 in January.
The Guyana all-rounder was selected as captain after leading the West Indies U19s on tours to the USA in August and India in November.
“It’s every cricketer’s dream to play for their country, let alone be able to captain their team, it’s a tremendous honor to do so at this inaugural ICC Women’s U19 World Cup “, Munisar told CWI media.
“We have been playing together for the last few months and all the players are doing and progressing quite well and we are all excited to represent the West Indies,” she added.
Her bowling and that of Trinidad and Tobago’s Shalini Samaroo were praised by West Indies Chief Selector for Women’s Cricket, Ann Browne-John.
The former West Indies women’s captain said the upcoming tournament was very important.
“The Girls Under-19 T20 World Cup will be a historic event being the first of its kind in women’s international cricket. In preparation for this the team embarked on the USA tour and the recent Tri-Series in India against the hosts and New Zealand,” said Browne-John.
“These series have identified some capable batsmen like Djenaba Joseph, Shunelle Sawh and Trishan Holder who are showing potential to move to a higher level. We also had excellent performances from the two main spinners, captain Ashmini Munisar and Shalini .Samaroo,” she added.
The West Indies have been drawn in Group C along with New Zealand, Ireland and Indonesia in the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup, which takes place from January 14-19, 2023 in South Africa.
Joseph, KD Jazz Mitchell, Shalini Samaroo and Shunelle Sawh from Trinidad and Tobago were selected for the West Indies U19 Women’s team.
